Another new painting of Cassandra. These poses were shot from up on a ladder above, which makes her seem kind of weightless.
New work! “Death in the Afternoon” + the piece close to finished, on the easel. The colors are like Absinth and hazy glowing afternoon sun, so Hemmingway’s famous cocktail came to mind. The double entendre with the french meaning of death, “le petite morte” also suits.
Gesture drawings from a live model last night. The black ones are 5 minute poses, and the one on toned paper is 10 minutes. Nupastel and charcoal stick. Life drawing is fantastic for reminding me to be efficient, less is more.
Sketchbook dump! Some pages from the past few months. You can tell that even in my sketchbook I love to draw people best.
Two new pieces. I am interested in the false modesty of these poses.
This is my first time using the Arches Oil Paper, which is a specialty paper that is not gessoed, but is archival for oil paint. I did the usual pastel drawings (a bit harder to get details with this surface) and then added oil paint for texture and variety in the backgrounds. You can see bits of oil paint more clearly in the close ups.
Seraphina Song is the model.
A photo of me at work in my home studio, created by Scott David Gordon.
This is a part of a series of panoramic photos he is creating, one per day for a year. Scott visited and took a lots of pictures as I moved around the studio. Taking the photos is the easy part, he described the most difficult part of the process as painstakingly stitching them together back at his studio - ensuring that all of the details in the room look seamless. Imagine dealing with that wood floor from 5 perspectives! His Panorama 365 project includes scenes of Austin nature and icons, as well as residents at work and play. See the whole series, updated every day: http://www.panorama365.com/
Just finished, another double exposure drawing: “Girl in Glasses”. I had fun drawing the pattern on her socks.
Also, I was fortunate to be featured in American Art Collector this month! December special issue on collecting figurative art. =)
